The combination of standard narration, Ninny’s recollection, and clippings from various newsletters makes for a varied, interesting read. There are a lot of characters, and most of them are given interesting histories and motivations.

The subtext of the story is clear and lovingly written although it is never stated explicitly, the dynamic between Ruth and Idgie and the comparisons to heterosexual couples and situations makes it obvious that they are a couple. The writing is very good, and the pacing between the two timelines is well done. I’m torn about this book because it is quite good, but there are enough things about it that bother me that I can’t honestly say that I like it. Still, in the café there is always food, friendship, and love to spare. Although their town seems idyllic and untouched by the depression, there’s actually a lot of darkness there: people get run over by trains, a woman escapes an abusive marriage, a man is murdered, and the Ku Klux Klan and racism permeate society. Central to Ninny’s story is her sister-in-law Idgie Idgie and her partner Ruth ran the Whistle Stop Café, where everyone in town congregated. Each week when Evelyn comes to see her, Ninny tells the story of the Whistle Stop Café and the people she grew up with. When middle-aged, menopausal Evelyn meets Ninny Threadgoode on a visit to a nursing home, the two women strike up an unlikely friendship. I don’t think that’s the case with Fried Green Tomatoes the things that bothered me ten years ago still bother me now. Now, at twenty-four, I figured I’d give it another try since there were a lot of books that I read and hated in my youth that I aged into and now love. The first time I read it was at least a decade ago I did not like it. Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café by Fannie Flagg is a weird book.
